Bleeding after a catheter....
15th-Oct-2007 05:16 pm [bladder infections]
Well, I had the catheter done today, and it only took a few seconds to do. Unfortunatly the after feeling HURTS like no other, and I'm bleeding like a light period after I urinate, but it only last a few wipes. I'm being put on amoxicillin for the 4-5th time now. I really hope they find out the source of my on-going bacteria in my urine cultures test. Has anybody ever been told by their obg that they had that too? Or am I of the unlucky 5-10% that just so happens to get that while pregnant. *bummed*
Should I be concerned??

Good news is my blood test from last Wednesday looked good, so no problems in that department.

I had severe UTIs as a child. at the time working them up wasn't standard like it is toady, but I do know the pain. The concern in pregnancy with UTI is twofold from what i remember, 1) your kidneys are already filtering at a higher rate due to pregnancy, infection could be very hard on them, and 2) UTIs are a major source of preterm labor, as bladder contractions can cause sympathetic uterine contractions, releasing oxytocin and starting labor.

I'm on Ampicillin at the moment because the doctor said there was a lot infection cells or something in my pee.

I am DEATHLY afraid of catheters. My old roomate who was pregnant told me about how they gave her a catheter at a doctor's appt. and how much it hurt. I never forgot what she said...

When it came time for me to go into the doctor with a UTI, they wanted to give me one but I begged them not to with tears in my eyes...I told them what my friend had said. They gave me a mini one because they HAD to do this test and I totally screamed....it hurt SO bad.

Now my birthplan says NO CATHETERS on it. Haha.

I had leukocytes (white blood cells) in my urine the entire time I was pregnant. I had multiple urine cultures, but nothing ever grew out of them. Because of all the stress on your body during pregnancy, it's not unusual for your bladder to get a little junky.
