plugged ears?
7th-Aug-2009 09:22 am [pregnancy symptoms]
So i'm roughly 38 weeks with my fourth child-the past 3 days I've woken up with my left ear plugged up.  It usually resolves itself within an hour but so far today it hasn't yet resolved.  I feel like i'm hearing at about 50%.  Now, i've googled and apparently this can be a pregnancy thing?   So are any of you ladies dealing with this?

(I have an appointment with my midwife next week and I'll bring this up with her but I may go to a drop in clinic tomorrow-i haven't yet decided, I'm not in any pain it's just really annoying)

Nasal congestion (which is extremely common in pregnancy) can cause "plugged-up ears," from the mucus in your nose draining over the tubes that connect your ears to your throat.

I personally haven't dealt with that, even though I have the nasal congestion and have since early in my first trimester (I'm 37w6d).

My partner says i've been snoring a bit at night-which for me is a sign of nasal congestion so maybe that explains it :/
thanks for your input!

i just finished dealing with this. I went to my regular doctor so they could check if it wasn't getting infected which it wasn't. She said it was serous otis media which is a blockage of your Eustachian tube because of fluid. Anyway I couldn't hear that well out my right ear and it kept popping. She said there is a medicine she could prescribe which I don't remember what it was and also I could take sudafed but the one w/ pseudoephedrine (sp) in that you have to get from the pharmacist. She spoke w/ my OB first and they couldn't approve me taking either thing while pregnant so I just had to deal w/ it. They said it usually takes 5-15 days to clear up and it did after like 3wks.

Thanks for your reply, it was very helpful; though the part where it takes 5-15 days to clear up is kind of depressing lol.

If what another commenter said is true about sudafed helping, go for it. It is safe for pregnancy, in fact it's one of the few medications you can take while you're pregnant. But you do have to use the stuff from behind the counter. And if you're planning on breastfeeding, discontinue it after you give birth because it can lower your supply.

how are you sinuses?
have you tried applying a worm compress to your neck along with a light massage to see if that helps?
is it more when when you get up from bed?
do you sleep on your left side?

i'm prone to sinus infections though i haven't had any problems during this pregnancy. I cannot sleep comfortably on either side at this point, so i've been switching from my right side to my left and vice versa roughly every 2 hrs at night. And yes, it's always when i get up from bed that i notice it.

I'll try the warm compress and massage-thanks!

Holy crap, this could be a pregnancy issue? My left ear has been totally fucked since July 11th. It got infected at one point, antibiotics took care of the pain, but it's still blocked D: I just want to hear again! I think I'll mention this to my OBGYN today.

since July? poor you :( When it was infected-did it hurt? i've never had an ear infection before but i'm not in any pain, i just can't hear very well.

And let me know what your OB thinks!

It started out hurting the first morning, then got better through the week, then the day I was leaving for a road trip it got worse (OF COURSE!). My Sister and Aunt talked me into going to the ER that night because it was leaking pus and the pain was so bad I could barely move/talk D: As soon as I took the antibiotics it started feeling better, then it got worse again, then it finally felt better. Now there's really no pain, it's just itchy and annoying lol. My Husband looked in there last night with a flashlight and said it's completely blocked with who knows what...it looks like dried up pus. We've tried peroxide to loosen it and a bulb syringe to flush it out with warm water with no luck. I have a feeling if my OB can't recommend something I may have to go to the regular doc. I'm so freaking done with it!
