Dropside Crib Conversion kits
1st-Jun-2010 01:33 pm [crib safety, cribs]
Sorry for the second post in one day.. Im starting to "nest" I guess and have so many baby things running through my mind.

We were given a crib from my mother in law that was bought about 10 years ago. It has the plastic dropside parts on it.

So we figured, the chances of it having a problem are so slim, and that people have been using them for so long, that we wouldnt worry about it. Well Lo and Behold yesterday I put a tiny bit of pressure on it and the plastic things broke, the side dropped and slid out exactly as we'd be warned about... Now Im glad that happened with me and not with a baby!

What are the conversion kits like? Without the plastic drop side rails, it seems too wide for the crib side to fit. Would it be better to toss it and buy a new one? I cant find the model number or make anywhere on the crib so I dont know which conversion kit to buy.

We are in a similar situation, except my bub is 5 months old. We just moved, and the movers misplaced the bar that supports the dropside of the crib, as well as has the tracks to put the side of the crib on.

My dad suggested that we order replacement parts from the crib company, but I'm not sure I even want to do that.

I think you just answered your own question. Time to buy a new crib!

Target's daily deal today is a nice Graco convertible crib for $111 with free shipping!

Edited to add my own personal anecdote - my DS is 20 months and we've been using a crib that's 20 years old and it wasn't a big deal when he was an infant, but now that he's a rowdy toddler it's getting wobbly and freaking me out so we decided to buy a new one. The $130 I spent on a new one is 100% worth the peace of mind that I know it's not going to fall apart.

IMHO I recommend a new crib WITHOUT the drop down side mechanism. I have a Graco Lauren convertible crib and it was under 200 bucks and so worth it- target and babies r us carries them and they come in 3 colors- white, natural and espresso.
