sharp pain while breathing?
12th-Oct-2010 03:07 pm [aches and pains, breathing difficulty, coughing]
tetris
i'm just waiting for my midwife to call me back so i can discuss this with her, but i'm curious if anyone else has had this too?

i have this sharp pain in my left lung when i breathe. every time i take a breath, i get a sharp stabbing pain when my lung is the fullest, and it continues as i exhale. it started yesterday afternoon while i was laying down, and i still have it. so i've had it about 24+ hours. it is right at the area of my lung under my left breast and that area is also sore to the touch. it's actually become very painful today as i've been at work running around all day :( i googled around a bit and the only thing i could find is that sometimes the baby will kick you up that high and bruise you, but i haven't had any kicks anywhere close to that area, and i'm only 30w so i don't even think my uterus is that high up yet.

has anyone else had anything like this? did you find out what it was? was it serious? i'm hoping my midwife calls me back soon. i'm also seeing her this sunday. i hope i don't have to go to L&D today :(

eta: midwife said it could either be a lung infection or i may have popped a rib out from coughing too hard. i had a cold a few days ago but have felt better for the most part today. i'm just happy it's nothing super serious or nothing wrong with baby! i have an appointment with my family doctor tomorrow to have a listen to my lungs and see what's up.

I've had that before I was pregnant, and it was gas bubbles. I'm wondering if maybe your organs are trying to find a place inside you around the baby?? I don't know, but I'm curious so please update when your m.w. calls back! I hope your okay.

thank you! yeah i was hoping it was just things shifting around or something but since i've had it for 24 hours i'm starting to get worried :(

Sounds like a cramp or bruise in your ribs. That kind of pain can seem scary, like there's something wrong with your heart or lungs, but it's rib pain.

my midwife said i may have a lung infection (i've had a cold the past couple days, so she said it could have made its way into my lungs) or i've popped a rib out from coughing so hard. i'm just happy it's nothing to do with the baby and it's not too serious.

A lung infection can be serious! I'd want to get to the doctor ASAP.

Lung infections are always concerning IMO because they can easily snowball into pneumonia.

Tomorrow is plenty soon enough. ;) Sorry if I seemed too frantic.

I've had this before. Not serious, just baby positioning. S/he's getting big enough to cause massive discomfort just by rolling over.

I had that and had actually pulled a muscle in my back.

how strange! what did you end up doing to fix it?

I lounged about like a bum for about a week. According to my midwife, it's fairly common because of everything expanding.

sometimes i get so frustrated when i ask my midwife about a pain and she says that to me! "it's normal, it's from everything stretching/expanding."

come on, you're a midwife. shouldn't you have some magical cure to help ease my pain?!

If they're thinking it's in your ribs and it's from coughing it could be the cartiledge between your ribs getting inflamed (costochondritis). I am prone to awful winter coughs and have grown sadly familiar with the condition. It feels like what you described and it'll go away once the cough can be controlled. Easier said than done, I know... good luck and I hope you feel better soon!

I was sick for about 7wks of my first pregnancy (6wks-13wks of pregnancy) with recurrent and very bad colds. I did most likely tear a muscle between my ribs from the violent coughing, and it was *painful*, but not just when I breathed. When I moved, sat, lied down, breathed- anything.

Definitely worth getting checked out, as it could be a number of things. Depending on what it is, they may or may not be able to do anything about it (I just took pain meds, relaxed, and let it heal).
