Late period or miscarriage? Please help!
21st-Apr-2011 10:29 pm [miscarriage]
Yesterday, being almost 3 weeks late, I took a pregnancy test and it was negative. I was almost sure the test was wrong. I have been experiencing slight weight gain and other period-like symptoms that lead me to be nearly sure that I am pregnant. Last night, I could barely sleep because of severe stomach cramps. This morning I started bleeding, but this is NOT a normal period for me. I am having severe cramps, bright red blood, large dark clots, on and off nausea and it is VERY heavy. I have also been experiencing strong headaches and body weakness and I am unsure if they are linked in someway. I did some research online and found that sometimes these are symptoms of miscarriage. So...is it just a late, miserable period, or is it possibly a miscarriage? I would really appreciate some advice/guidance. Thanks so much!

At almost 3 weeks late and a negative pregnancy test, I'd say you ovulated late so your period was late.

Without either a positive pee test or a positve blood test it is hard to say for sure.

I had an early miscarriage the first cycle we TTC. I had a 12 day leutal phase and then what seemed like a "normal" for me period. Full on. I tested negative the day I started my period. I tested positive the day after I finished my period (I was charting and my temp stayed elevated so I knew something was not "right") 2 days after the period stopped, I started spotting again - bright flaming red definately not normal for me. I took another test to see it come up negative, only to get a positive.

It took 8 days and 3 HCG qantitative blood tests to learn that I was miscarrying. Other than spotting, I had no other symptoms. Spotted off and on for 3-4 weeks.

I had this EXACT same experience. I wasn't charting that cycle but the bleeding/spotting wasn't going away so I went to the doctor and had a positive pregnancy test. I had a negative at home the day before the bleeding started.

So, possible miscarriage or you just ovulated late and are having a late period because of it.

It could be either way: you could have just ovulated late (which would give a heavy period anyway) or you could have had a miscariage.

However from my own experience of may miscarriages, I would have thought you would have had a positive test if it were a miscarriage.

ETA: early miscarriage, that is before 6 weeks, if very, very common and it won't affect your chances of going on to have a sucessful pregnancy. Also after an early miscarriage there is no need to wait before trying again.

It is hard to say, because late periods are often heavy and wonky as well.
This is kind of gross, but I can tell you one thing. I just had a known miscarriage around that time, and it *smelled* very different than a period. Like, markedly. If you've never had a live birth, you might not understand this, but smelled just like locchia. Hard to explain, but more like regular blood, whereas my period has a different smell. That was the main thing that made it different from a heavy period for me (aside from, you know, the fact I did eventually pass a small fetus/placenta, although it doesn't mean you didn't have one if you didn't, because sometime those break down/are reabsorbed).

Thanks so much for the help everyone. I feel a little better today. I am still cramping, but not quite as bad. I really appreciate all of the help! I will probably go ahead and make a doctors appointment for next week just to be sure. It just doesn't seem like a normal period. I know it's weird and probably doesn't make sense, but it even feels different emotionally. Like, I suddenly feel very depressed and down. Your comments really helped though! Thanks so much!!!!
