I am 11 weeks and will be 12 weeks on friday (I cannot believe I have gotten this far!) When does the second trimester officially start? I am finding a lot of answers but not one solid one.

First appt with the hospital on friday. *sigh* I hate blood tests.

My pregnancy book says 2nd trimester starts at 13 weeks until 26 weeks (though many say until 28 weeks).
Good luck with the blood test!

That's what I thought as well but I have been told by my whole family that it starts at 12 weeks.

I just hate blood tests because they can never get it out my arm so I just tell them to do it through my hand and it hurts and freaks me out.

If you do that math, 12 weeks + 12 weeks + 12 weeks is 36 weeks. Its more accurate to say 13+13+13 is 39, so, thats usually what is "standard. Thats what I go by anyway, but what the heck do I know! :)

Agreed. That does make more sense. I was trying to do the maths with 12 weeks before and none of it sounded right.

A tri is a third, so 13weeks plus a little would be accurate, but it starts at 13 weeks really. I think people get confused because most people say you're more 'in the clear' at 12 weeks and assume it is because the second trimester begins, but you aren't quite in the second tri yet :)

I think some confusion is also the fat that people consider 3 months to be a trimester, and then count 4 weeks per month, forgetting those extra 2-3 days per month past 4 weeks (the 29th, 30th, 31st). add those up for 3 months that's 12 weeks plus an extra 5-8 days.. so closer to 13 weeks.

This is what I'm thinking, too.

See my OB/GYN says 14 weeks starts the 2nd trimester (40 weeks to a pregnancy) and newer pregnancy books I have read say the same thing. *shrugs*

Baby center says 14 weeks, too.</p>

...not that they are the authority on all things pregnancy or anything, but just saying.

That's what I went by. I also am going by the calculation that the third trimester starts at 28 weeks ... I figure if I use the latest dates, I can be SUPER-sure.

this makes the most sense, since 13+13+13 only comes to 39, so an extra needs to be added in somewhere. and when you count the fact that conception occurs 2 weeks into what we count as pregnancy, that means you're only pregnant for 12 of those 14 weeks.. so second trimester starts at 12 weeks of actual pregnancy, 14 weeks of calculated pregnancy.

It's like 13.3 Weeks or something like that. Most medical professionals will either say week 13 or week 14.
