First appointment.
20th-Apr-2014 09:19 pm [first appointment]
When was your first appointment scheduled? Mine will be when I'm 12 weeks along, I'm currently 4w2d. I'm pretty sure I went in WAY earlier than that with my other two children.
21st-Apr-2014 01:21 am (UTC)
8-12 weeks sounds pretty normal
21st-Apr-2014 01:35 am (UTC)
It's so hard to keep it a secret from my family for two MONTHS. I can't tell them that I'm pregnant and then say "wait, never mind" a few weeks later if I have a miscarriage. *sigh*
21st-Apr-2014 02:26 am (UTC)
I mean, I know how hard it is, but what if you have a late miscarriage? You can't keep it a secret the whole time either. Either tell them or don't. Unless you go in for an early ultrasound, they won't be able to tell you much before 12 weeks anyway.

Eta: you can always have the doc order labs and go in just for that, or schedule a separate U/S appointment. Unless you want all the early testing done, if it may change your mind.

Well I wouldn't tell anyone I was pregnant until I heard the heartbeat/hand an ultrasound and knew everything was going well. It's just so far away! Hah.
21st-Apr-2014 03:53 am (UTC)
Just as someone who's had two miscarriages, both off which I didn't find out about until I was 12 weeks, I have to say that I was glad I told some people because I needed their support when the losses happened. I hope ask guys well for you, but don't be to afraid to tell your closest people.
21st-Apr-2014 04:00 am (UTC)
Miscarriages are hard. I didn't tell anyone about my previous miscarriage over the summer, so I don't think I'd tell anyone if I had another.
21st-Apr-2014 04:01 am (UTC)
And I'm sorry for yours <3
21st-Apr-2014 11:24 am (UTC)
This...i didn't miscarry but i told everyone the day i found out. I was so excited and if i did lose it...i would need them. Plus my entire life is an open book
21st-Apr-2014 01:21 am (UTC)
Mine is for May 27th, at which point I'll be 10 weeks. I went earlier with my son because my dates were super wonky (ovulated way late).
21st-Apr-2014 01:36 am (UTC)
I went in around 5 weeks with my son and 5/6 with my daughter. Had bloodwork, ultrasounds, etc. I can't tell anyone I'm pregnant until I at least hear a heart beat, so this is going to be a long 2 months!
21st-Apr-2014 03:08 am (UTC)
I saw the heartbeat at 9 weeks. You probably won't have to wait another 2 months to hear it.
21st-Apr-2014 03:45 am (UTC)
But I have to wait 2 months for an appointment to hear it hah.
21st-Apr-2014 03:48 am (UTC)
Is that the earliest appointment you can get? I think you can start hearing the heartbeat at 6-8 weeks.
21st-Apr-2014 12:32 pm (UTC)
I saw my GP before 5 weeks with my first (basically a couple days after I found out) and they did a pee test and checked hormone levels. When I went to the OB, they told me they don't usually see people until 9 or 10 weeks. My parents and in-laws knew right away, and we waited until 12 weeks to tell extended family/go public on FB.
21st-Apr-2014 01:34 am (UTC)
Around 11 weeks each time.

With midwives that's typical. With OBs, they'll often have you meet with a nurse much earlier.
21st-Apr-2014 01:35 am (UTC)
I haven't even made an appointment yet :/ In my defense, it is Easter weekend and nothing is open.
With my daughter, my first appointment was at 14 weeks. I felt that was WAY too late.
21st-Apr-2014 01:45 am (UTC)
My first was about 14 weeks. I had miscarried an earlier pregnancy and didn't want bad news again.

My second was the same...probably between 12-14 weeks.
21st-Apr-2014 01:55 am (UTC)
I had my first appointment at 7 weeks and first ultrasound at 9 weeks. I'm almost 13 weeks now and my next appointment is on Thursday.
21st-Apr-2014 02:00 am (UTC)
I am scheduled for my first ultrasound/appointment at 7 weeks.
21st-Apr-2014 02:03 am (UTC)
With my last 3 pregnancies I went in around 8 weeks. My 1st was 7 years ago and I don't remember. I share the news with close family; support with a loss was important to me. With this current pregnancy we waited a few weeks to share the news. Coming so soon after a loss made me hesitant but in the end I couldn't hold out.
21st-Apr-2014 03:45 am (UTC)
:( I had a miscarriage over the summer and I haven't told anyone yet hah. I'm the type of person who will not let others support me and I don't show emotion. I prefer people not know when I'm vulnerable i suppose.
21st-Apr-2014 02:59 am (UTC)
8 weeks with my son. This time around it was 10ish weeks.
21st-Apr-2014 03:14 am (UTC)
I went in at 8 weeks with my first and 7 weeks with my second. By 12 weeks, I was going in for the anatomy scan for both children.
21st-Apr-2014 04:07 am (UTC)
My first was around 6 weeks, but because I hadn't had a period in 3 or 4 months they wanted to get me in asap to date it. Otherwise I think they don't normally do it until 8-10 weeks, here.
21st-Apr-2014 04:28 am (UTC)
12 weeks does seem a bit late. I think mine was at almost 9 weeks. But, there were a couple of different factors----1.) I'm in Utah, which has the highest fertility rate in the country and pregnancy is, like, srs bsns here!, 2.) this was my first pregnancy ever and I didn't have any dates or anything and was completely anxious about it, and 3.) I had been spotting for 3+ weeks at that point and I think they were concerned. I'm not sure I would have gotten an appointment so soon otherwise.

That said, I still haven't heard the heartbeat, and I'll be 13.5 weeks/in my second trimester on Wednesday! My midwife scheduled an ultrasound at 10 weeks (mostly for a more accurate due date) so we've *seen* the heartbeat, but I've never actually heard it. We have our second appointment next week, and I'm hoping we'll hear it then!
(And it is my understanding that we have an appointment next week because they do appointments every 4 weeks, based off when your first appointment was, if that makes sense.)

Congratulations! :D

Almost 11 weeks this time, 13 weeks with my son.
There's little benefit it doing it sooner, all early screening (at least at my clinics) is done around 12 weeks. You won't hear a HB earlier than that either so most providers won't even look. There isn't much point in going in earlier, my first visit this time was literally to welcome me to the OB clinic, they didn't even examine me.

8 weeks
21st-Apr-2014 11:28 am (UTC)
They did internal ultrasound and i heard the heartbeat
21st-Apr-2014 12:24 pm (UTC)
Doctors seem to take this on a case by case basis. For my first, I was seen at 5 weeks, 8 weeks, 12 weeks etc. But there was concern it would be a tubal so my doc got me in right away. This time around I'm under the care of midwives and I'll be just after 9 weeks.
21st-Apr-2014 01:39 pm (UTC)
First pregnancy: Doc appointment at 9 weeks, found out we lost the pregnancy.
Second pregnancy: Doc appointment at 11 weeks
Third pregnancy: Doc appointment at 6 weeks (I ovulated late in my cycle, so according to my LMP, I should have been closer to 9 weeks. Doc wanted me to come in for dating, since my cycle was so wonky.)

I think it really depends on the practice, but 8-12 weeks is the norm around here (Tennessee).
21st-Apr-2014 06:08 pm (UTC)
With my first, it was in the 7th week, but I had some spotting and was concerned, so they got me in sooner. This time, it was in week 10.
21st-Apr-2014 09:48 pm (UTC)
12 or 13 weeks
21st-Apr-2014 10:42 pm (UTC)
12 weeks with #1. About 10 with 2 & this one.

Not all doctors/midwives do early ultrasounds (and not all insurance will cover it), so there isn't always really much point to go earlier - you typically can't hear a heartbeat with Doppler until 10-12 weeks. Sometimes a little earlier but not significantly.
22nd-Apr-2014 12:53 am (UTC)
I remember you from the Nov 2009 due date group :D (I haven't been around LJ in a long time, so excuse my excitement at remembering someone haha)
22nd-Apr-2014 01:15 am (UTC)
Oh, awesome! I'm assuming you had a different username at that point. ;) I know what you mean though - I haven't been around LJ much either!
22nd-Apr-2014 01:31 am (UTC)
Yep! Haha. I was going to post my old name here, buhhh my pregnancy is super secret classified information haha. I'm going to PM you though :D
22nd-Apr-2014 01:39 am (UTC)
Awesome! Congrats! (I tried to respond to your message but my phone is dumb so idk if it went through.) I totally understand though. I've just been avoiding posting for the past 2 months and just finally told my parents yesterday lol
22nd-Apr-2014 01:56 am (UTC)
Haha, once I tell my parents, I can tell everyone else. I just don't want them to hear it from anyone else because they'd be upset.. but I also don't want to tell them before I have an appointment and know everything is good. #pregnantproblems!
22nd-Apr-2014 09:58 am (UTC)
Haha that's exactly how I felt!! But I finally had my first appt so I told thrm last week since I'm 12 weeks now. Figured I might as well get it over with! (My mom was excited but my dad was like "are you crazy?!")
21st-Apr-2014 11:42 pm (UTC)
I thought I was 10 weeks by the time they let me come in even though I called them around 5-6 weeks. Turned out I was 9 weeks. But that office was really big on some genetic screening to be done between 11 and 13 weeks. I'm glad we had the extra time to decide if we were going to have it done or not.
22nd-Apr-2014 12:26 am (UTC)
With my first I went in at 6 weeks even though they said it was unnecessary, and all they did was a pee test exactly the same as at home. With the second my first appointment was at 12 weeks.
22nd-Apr-2014 03:06 am (UTC)
6 weeks. It probably didn't have to be that early but I'm glad my doctor let me come in then.
22nd-Apr-2014 03:29 am (UTC)
My first OB appointment was around 8 weeks. Although, since we did IVF, I'd seen the heartbeats and had ultrasounds before that.
22nd-Apr-2014 05:48 pm (UTC)
I went to my GP pretty much as soon as I got a positive, but they just gave me the midwives number. Then it was nothing until my 12 week ultrasound. That was the firs confirmation I had apart from my home tests, so I was pretty anxious about it.
23rd-May-2014 10:33 am (UTC)
I had my first appointment at 8 weeks!
