Is anyone on WIC? If so, what happened when you went to apply for it? I have been told by my boyfriend's brother that they take a blood test, I don't like doctors at all and I'm scared that if they do take blood that I'll pass out. Everytime I've been to the doctor I can't hear, I see spots, and I have to sit down. I know when I go and if they say they have to take blood I have to tell them about it. My boyfriend has already said that he'll bring crackers and juice for me.

EDIT: I went in and they just weighed me and gave me a lot of info, I was able to set up an OB appointment for the 14th. They didn't take any blood but I guess that's what will happen on the 14th. Everyone was really nice but one lady asked me how did I know I am pregnant. I just told her that I had took two test, she said okay but I don't think she trusted me.

i was on WIC with my last pregnancy. when i went in to apply, i had to bring a note from my doctor stating that i was pregnant. it also had my EDD on it. then they weighed me, had me fill out a "24 hour food history" to write down what i had eaten the day before, then they checked my iron levels [finger prick blood test, i seriously didn't even FEEL it] and that was about it.

They didn't tell us any of this. I don't have a doctor yet, and I guess I'll write down what I've had today. Thank you!!

They do a finger prick test to test you for anemia, that's all. It's nothing!
9th-Aug-2006 06:01 pm (UTC)
Thank you. But I mean I figured they would test you to make sure you are pregnant.

I don't think they even have the resources there to do a pregnancy blood test (no phlebotomist/no one to take blood intravenuously.) So no, I don't think so, they'd probably have you bring proof of pregnancy from your doctor or somewhere else.

That's what I was worried about b/c I haven't been to a doctor yet. I don't have insurance and we are getting an app. from masshealth. But I go tomo to wic and it would be a waste of gas if we go and they can't do anything.

i'd call because i'm pretty sure WIC doesn't do pregnancy tests or anything... see if they'll see you anyway, maybe on a provisional status to get you set up.

I'll have my boyfriend call b/c last time I couldn't understand the guy and stressed myself out.

they might have you take a pee test? i don't know. i didn't get wic until my daughter was several weeks old.
9th-Aug-2006 06:10 pm (UTC)
I just asked a friend and she said they took a pee test.

If you don't have insurance or anything (i'm pretty sure they knew I was preg. because I was on Medicaid) and you want to be better safe than sorry before you go into WIC, go to Planned Parenthood and get proof of pregnancy there. It's like $5 for the test and the actual paper that they give you to prove your preggers and the due date.
9th-Aug-2006 06:16 pm (UTC)
it's $10 for us, I checked that already. Right now we don't have any money but I guess if we really need it that his parents will give us the money. Thank you!!

at the WIC i go to, they give you a pee test (like what you buy in a store!) to test for pregnancy. Seriously, its just like the $1 tests you get at Dollar General.

I'm on WIC. What I had to do to apply was just bring in the household income and my Medicaid card. They didn't ask for proof of pregnancy or anything. They got my pre-preg weight, my current weight, finger prick for checking iron and then they gave me my checks for this month and set me up an appointment with a Lactation Consultant.

thank you!!

They help out with food, you get checks for milk, cheese, juice, that sort of thing. This link is just for Mass. but I'm sure you can find it for your state.

WIC is a gov. program that is for preg. women and their children (up to age 5, I believe). If you qualify (which you probably do since you're on medicaid) they give you special checks that you use to buy groceries and such. They also help you out with breastfeeding, birthing classes, and help you find a pediatrician once baby arrives. I know they do tons more, but i've only just got it so we'll see what else they have to offer =)

since you metioned masshealth in a comment, i'm assuming you're from mass, so am i! when i went to WIC for the first time i had to bring proof of pregnancy, which can be a lot of things. if you don't have a doctor yet, i'd go to a planned parenthood clinic or some other kind of free clinic, they'll give a test for free and then fill out a form saying your pregnant and all that. thats what i had when i went to WIC. They do prick your finger to test for iron, and i have problems with needles as well, but it doesn't hurt or anything, you barely feel it.
9th-Aug-2006 06:18 pm (UTC)
Yes, I'm in Seekonk. I will talk to my fiance and see what he thinks and maybe he'll call wic, I looked online and they said the test was $10. Thank you!!

When I went for my WIC apt I had to pee on a stick so they could be sure I'm pregnant.. the only thing blood related they did to me was they tested for anemia.. that's a little tiny prick on the finger. I hope you get over being scared of getting blood work done if you're pregnant because you'll get it quite a few times if are. When I was first pregnant I was scared to death of needles, but I really got over my fear after the 3rd or 4th blood test.
GOOD luck!!

I'm on WIC. I'm in Michigan so I went to the county health department and applied there. The blood that they took, btw, was just a thumb (or finger, can't remember) prick one. It's like getting your ear pierced. One snap and then it's done. They cover it and put a bandaid on your thumb. It's really simple.

http://www.fns.usda.gov/wic/ this is also a helpful site.

thank you! and i do have that site saved.

When I signed up for WIC here (PA), I had to bring in proof of residency (lease, or even a bill or piece of mail with your name and address on it), proof of pregnancy (usually a note from a doctor/pregnancy clinic or an ultrasound), proof of income/lack of (paystubs from the last month, if you're working or someone in your household is), and of course photo ID.

They do a finger prick test, weigh you, and ask you all sorts of nutrition related questions, but that's about it. :)

I was all kinds of scared when the woman mentioned blood test when I went to apply for WIC.
But really, they just prick you on the finger.
Just a drop of blood and it's done. hehe

They don't really test you to see if you're pregnant. They usually have you bring something from the Dr. saying that you're pregnant and your due date and such.
They test you to check your levels for iron and such.
It's not really a big deal. :o)
Having to sit in the freakin office forever to actually apply is the worst part.
9th-Aug-2006 08:59 pm (UTC)
Oh yeah.
Trust me, with being pregnant...your fear of doctors and blood work/needles will disappear after a bit.
Seeing as how when you're pregnant, you get a TON of blood work done, and you see the doctor so freakin much. hehe
Don't worry about it. :o)

i went in there the first time the day b4 my due date, and the lady set up everything. she had me get a note from my ob to state that i was pregnant and my due date. she asked me if i planned on breast feeding, and then told me what were on all the checks and what i could and couldnt get. she went over healthyness for me while i was still pregnant, and weighed me. she did a blood test (wasnt a big deal, didnt even hurt) but i dont know how many ppl noticed this but it wasnt accurate. the test at WIC for me said it was 7 normal is like 12 i think but they will take 11. and at the doctors the prior month i was up at 14, and my ob said the only way i could have gone from a 14 to a 7 is major blood loss, and i didnt lose any .

sorry, dont mean to worry you , im just rambaling. its really harmless and hopefully you get a smarter person than i did.

and i hated docs b4 hand and i STILL hate doctors lol, somethings just dont die lol

The thing is I don't have a doctor and the office is closed. My boyfriend said he would call them in the morning and see if I need to bring in paperwork showing that I'm pregnant, if I need to we will go by Planned Parenthood and take one there. Thank you.

not a blood test. they prick your finger to check for iron.

I had to call first and make a Wic appointment. I drove all the way to my health department without making an apointment, and they just sent me home. I also had to have proof of pregnancy, which was done at the local Save a life. They give you a pee test, and a piece of paper with your results on it. You have to give this to the health department to get started on Wic. When I went in for my Wic appointment, they just checked my blood pressure, did the finger prick test for iron, and checked my weight. Other than that, I talked to the Wic lady for about a half hour filling out paperwork, and then it was done.
